Riot Games Plans to Merges League of Legends Servers in Southeast Asia
November 26, 2024
Riot Games, the developer of League of Legends (LoL), has announced an update for players in Southeast Asia. The company plans to merge several servers in the region, except for Vietnam. The new server structure will combine the following:
- Indonesia/Malaysia/Singapore
- Philippines
- Thailand
Purpose of the Server Merge
Riot Games aims to improve the matchmaking experience in the region with this merge. By consolidating servers, players will experience faster matchmaking queues, reducing wait times significantly. Additionally, the merge is intended to create a more competitive environment in Southeast Asia by increasing the player pool, leading to fairer and more challenging gameplay.
Timeline and Details
According to the official League of Legends website, the server merge is scheduled to take place with patch 15.1, starting on January 9, 2025. After the merge, players from the Philippines, Thailand, and Indonesia/Malaysia/Singapore will need to use an in-game item to change their region. Riot Games may offer this item for free for a limited time to facilitate the transition.
Riotβs History of Server Merges
This is not the first time Riot has consolidated servers in Southeast Asia. When the game was still published by Garena, a similar merge occurred in 2019, combining the Indonesian server with the Malaysia/Singapore server. Riot Games officially took over publishing rights for League of Legends in 2023, marking a new era for the game in the region.
