Understanding the New Swiss Stage Format at M6 World Championship 2024
October 7, 2024
The biggest annual Mobile Legends: Bang Bang tournament, the M6 World Championship, is still scheduled to begin in November 2024. However, excitement among Mobile Legends esports fans is already building. This comes after Moonton, the publisher of MLBB, officially announced a brand-new competition format for M6.
The M6 World Championship 2024 will introduce the Swiss Stage format, marking the first time this system has been used in a Mobile Legends international tournament. Previously, Mobile Legends competitions typically used a regular season and playoffs format for MPL leagues, while international events featured group stages followed by knockout rounds.
So, how does the new Swiss Stage format work? Here’s a detailed explanation.
What Is the Swiss Stage Format?
In a Swiss Stage format, teams are matched against opponents with similar records throughout the tournament. Teams will face other teams that have the same win-loss record, ensuring more balanced and competitive matchups.
The Swiss Stage will consist of five rounds, and each team will play between three and five matches, depending on their results.
M6 World Championship 2024 Swiss Stage Format

Round 1
- All 16 teams will be randomly matched.
- Matches will be played in a Best-of-One (BO1) format.
Round 2
- The eight teams with a 1-0 record will be randomly matched against each other in BO1 matches.
- The eight teams with a 0-1 record will also be randomly matched against each other in BO1 matches.
Round 3
- The four teams with a 2-0 record will face each other in Best-of-Three (BO3) matches.
- The eight teams with a 1-1 record will be randomly matched in BO1 matches.
- The four teams with a 0-2 record will compete in BO3 matches.
Round 4
- The six teams with a 2-1 record will be randomly matched in BO3 matches.
- The six teams with a 1-2 record will also be randomly matched in BO3 matches.
Round 5
- The six remaining teams with a 2-2 record will compete in BO3 matches.
Qualification and Elimination Rules
Teams that achieve three wins will qualify for the Playoffs:
- 3-0 record after Round 3
- 3-1 record after Round 4
- 3-2 record after Round 5
Meanwhile, teams that accumulate three losses will be eliminated from the tournament:
- 0-3 record after Round 3
- 1-3 record after Round 4
- 2-3 record after Round 5
As a result, some teams may complete their Swiss Stage journey in just three matches, while others may need to play all five rounds before their fate is decided.
After the Swiss Stage concludes, the qualified teams will advance to the Playoffs, which will use a Double Elimination bracket format.
Why the Swiss Stage Makes M6 More Exciting
The introduction of the Swiss Stage is expected to make the M6 World Championship more competitive, balanced, and entertaining. Since teams will continuously face opponents with similar records, qualification and elimination will be determined more accurately based on performance and skill level.
The format also creates highly anticipated matchups between top-performing teams. By Round 3, undefeated teams will already be facing one another, resulting in high-stakes matches as they battle for the first playoff spots.
With more meaningful games and fairer competition, the Swiss Stage could become one of the most exciting format changes ever introduced to the Mobile Legends esports scene.
